U.S. News & World Report has released its annual list of the top-ranked high schools in the country.

Gray Stone Day School, a public charter school in Misenheimer, was 28th in North Carolina and 801 in the nation for the 2024 Best High Schools rankings released Tuesday.

U.S. News & World Report gave Gray Stone a score of 95.46 out of 100, with 93% of students taking at least one AP exam, 61% passing at least one AP exam, 75% achieving math proficiency, 76% having reading proficiency, 80% showing science proficiency and a 93% graduation rate. The school increased in percentages for students taking an AP exam, math and science proficiency and graduation rate.

“I am so proud of our students and staff,” said Helen Nance, chief administrative officer for the school of 398. “Everyone works very hard all year to provide a strong education and it is nice to receive recognition for the work. It also shows we are preparing our students for the future.”

U.S. News gathered information on more than than 17,000 high schools out of nearly 25,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Gray Stone ranked in the top 4% and was ranked ninth highest among charter schools.

Gray Stone was ranked 16th in the state in 2023 and ninth in 2022.

The announcement was made during National Charter Schools Week. Fourteen charter schools made the list of the top 50 high schools in North Carolina
