In an initiative formed out of leadership and service, high school senior Teddy Morton has launched a peer-led tutoring program aimed at providing middle school students with extra academic support.
As part of his senior community service project, Morton aims to foster both academic excellence and mentorship in his school.
Morton along with his peers, helped to establish “Study Buddies Tutoring” by first forming a committee with school administration and staff to design the after-school program.
Morton’s goals were not only to boost academic performance, but also build confidence among younger students, develop good study habits, promote leadership and create a sense of community by strengthening ties between middle and high school. Sessions are held weekly and focus areas include Mathematics, Science, English and Social Studies.
“I wanted to do something that would be meaningful and sustainable after I graduated.
Middle school to high school can be a tough transition academically, so if we can help students now, they will be better prepared for high school,” said Morton. Faculty advisor, Matt Banish, praised Morton for his initiative.
“I am so impressed with Teddy and the relationships that he and his peers are building with students.
Middle schoolers look up to older students, and that mentorship is just as valuable as the tutoring itself.
This is a great example of student leadership and civic responsibility.”
Morton is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, Diversity Club, Mock Trial team, Cheer team, Boys Track and Boys Volleyball teams.
Gray Stone Day School is a public charter school for grades 6-12 and free to attend.
