Albemarle, NC – The Stanly County High School Quiz Bowl is an academic competition, which allows high school students the opportunity to demonstrate academic excellence by responding to questions on a wide variety of academic subjects.

The Quiz Bowl competition was held at Stanly Community College (SCC) on Saturday, February 15, 2020. Each of the following high schools brought two teams to participate in the double elimination competition: Albemarle School, Gray Stone, North Stanly, South Stanly, Stanly Early College and West Stanly.

Gray Stone Day School, coached by Mr. Honeycutt, Mr. Dry, Mr. Habeeb and Mrs. Peterson, won the trophy. The team will compete in the Regional Quiz Bowl on Saturday, March 28, at 1:00 p.m., in the Schechter Auditorium of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

Stanly Community College, Pfeiffer University, Stanly County Schools, Gray Stone Day School, Uwharrie Bank and Stanly County Public Library sponsored the event.

“On behalf of the Quiz Bowl Committee, I would like to say thank you to everyone that helped make the quiz bowl such a success. The event would not be possible without the support of the faculty and staff at SCC and the community leaders who volunteer as officials,” noted Tanya Nicks, Chair, Quiz Bowl Committee, and Psychology Instructor at SCC. “The high school teachers who coach the teams and the students who participate prepare for months for this event. The wealth of knowledge displayed is absolutely stunning.”

Quiz bowl questions range over the entire spectrum of knowledge, and often include sports, art, music, and literature. During the event, one of the questions asked was, “What element was removed from Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper by careless workers? Answer: Jesus’ feet.”

For more information, please contact Tanya Nicks at (704) 991-0290 or tnicks0008@stanly.edu. The next Quiz Bowl Competition is scheduled for February 2021.
