In today’s ever-changing world, the mental health of children and adolescents has become a subject of paramount importance.
Whether it is meeting with students about academics, career and college readiness or personal and social issues, high school counselor Roy Morgan has a multifaceted role in addressing the needs of the whole child and their holistic development.
Schools, often serving as a second home to young minds, play a crucial role in promoting academic but also emotional and psychological well-being.
According to data collected in 2021 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Adolescent and School Health, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless, nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health, 1 in 5 (22%) seriously considered attempting suicide, and 1 in 10 (10%) attempted suicide.
These alarming findings emphasize the need for effective mental health education and early intervention strategies in schools.
“Gray Stone Day School is committed to prioritizing mental health education and awareness as a step to cultivate well-rounded and resilient individuals.
Mr. Morgan is a such a valuable and integral part of our school in assisting students to be mentally healthy which increases the likelihood of being successful in other areas in and outside the classroom.
We are incredibly fortunate to have him at Gray Stone Day School,” said Helen Nance, chief administrative officer.
Morgan earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Pfeiffer University and his Masters of Education in School Counseling from Liberty University.
He has been with Gray Stone Day School since 2015 and brings over 20 years of counseling experience to students and families.
“It is my belief that every person exists to make a contribution in this life that no one else can.
My hope is to help every student navigate their teenage years successfully and become the adult of significance I know they can be.
If they carry nothing else from their time at Gray Stone, my goal is that they each know their value comes simply because they exist and that they mattered to me,” Morgan said.
Gray Stone Day School is a regional institution offering a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum for students in grades 6-12 and tuition-free.
